Late-presenting hernia.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: There is a milder form of congenital diaphragmatic hernia that doesn´t have symptoms during the neonatal period, until a later stage.
Material and methods: A review of patients with late-presenting congenital diaphragmatic hernia was made in a period of 5 years in our institutions.
Results: Eleven patients were identified with late-presenting hernia, from which we obtained the following results: 7 male and 4 female, with an average age of 18 months, 9 patients with chronic and 2 with acute presentation; the 2 acute cases presented sudden respiratory difficulty, pulmonary hipoplasia of 20% and without hernia sac. The left side was more affected. No mortality was reported and one case was recurrent,
Discussion: The clinic spectrum of late-presenting posterolateral hernia is conditioned by two factors: 1) the moment of evisceration to the thorax and 2) type of abdominal viscera displaced.
