ABSTRACT
Introduction: Hepatitis C is a serious public health problem. Transfusion is an important etiological factor for hepatitis C infection. Patients who have received contaminated blood products presently account for about 25% of people with HCV. The aim of this work was to evaluate the prevalence of antibodies against hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) in blood donors at two regional hospital blood banks in western Mexico.
Donors and methods: In this study 2,439 blood donors (2,054 men and 387 women) of Lagos de Moreno and 1,465 blood donors (1,263 men and 202 women) of La Barca received from 1995 to 1998 were included. IgG antibodies anti-HCV was determined by the ELISA method with third-generation reagent (Ortho-Chirion). Hemagglutination tests (Serodia) were also used.
Results: The prevalence observed in Lagos de Moreno was 0.082% (two male donors were anti-HCV+ in a total of 2,439). In La Barca, the observed prevalence was 0.27% (3 females and 1 male donors were anti-HCV+ in a total of 1,465).
Conclusion: In the regions studied, the prevalence of anti-HCV antibodies was lower than reported in another reference centers. This is explained because the principal trait of blood donors is that there is a restricted selection system of donors.
