ABSTRACT
Objective. To calculate sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negativepredictive value of a rapid test (
Determine Syphilis TP)® and a passive agglutination test (
Serodia TP-PA®)for syphilis diagnosis in serum samples.
Methods. Both, rapid test and passive agglutination test were evaluated with 926 samples from the National Health Survey 2000. An immunofluorescense test (
FTA-ABS®) was employed as gold standard.
Results. The rapid test had 100% sensitivity and the passive agglutination test 97.4%, they showed 98.4% and 99.6% of specificity, 98.1% and 99.5% positive predictive value and 100% and 97.9% nega-tive predictive value, respectively.
Conclusions. The tests evaluated had a good performance. Particularly, for the rapid test which is a treponemic assay, the sensitivity and specificity were satisfactory for syphilis diagnosis. The rapid test is a good option to hospitals, health clinics, blood donation facilities and research protocols at the field because it is easy and quick to perform syphilis diagnosis in serum samples.
