Confidential unit exclusion in blood donors and associated factors

ABSTRACT
A retrospective and observational study, was carried out. It included the period of May 1996 to April 1997, and reviewed 366 epidemiologic files of donors who answered the pamphlet of confidential unit exclusion negatively and whose serology was positive and confirmatory to HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. The purpose was determine the efficacy of confidential unit exclusion in blood donors, factors that influence, and their utility in avoiding transmission of illnesses by means of the blood, in donors at the Central Blood Bank at the Centro Médico Nacional «Siglo XXI». In the previously mentioned period, a total of 95,268 donors was assisted, with confidential unit exclusion in 109 individuals (0.11%). Of these there were only two positives (1.83%) representing an efectiveness of 0.54% of the pamphlet in 366 seropositives (0.38%), concluding that effectiveness is limited and of little usefulnesss. Causes to be highlighted for HIV are educated single males, promiscuity and homosexuality. For hepatitis B, contact with sex workers, surgery, and association of three or more risk factors, and last, hepatitis C, tattoos, acupuncture, and odontologic treatment.REFERENCES
