ABSTRACT
Background: In the second and third part of this article were established the background and the results obtained from diagnostic discrepancies of death causes, analyzed by autopsy in Cuba, from 1994 to 2003.
Objective: To specify diagnostic discrepancies of direct and basic causes of death.
Material and methods: These discrepancies were analyzed according to periods, counties, main hospitals, sex, age groups, specialty of discharge and hospital length of stay. The great sample size allowed very precise estimates, a fact reflected in the small width of the 95% confidence intervals obtained for percentages.
Results: Important differences were not observed among categories of the different variables regarding percentages of discrepancies. The observed distribution of discrepancies through the different categories of sex, age and hospital length of stay is similar to the one reported by most similar studies.
Conclusions: Nevertheless, diseases, direct or basic causes of death, show bigger differences and therefore require special attention. We devote the fourth part of this work to this issue.
