ABSTRACT
Background. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an important issue of worldwide health, it is known that this illness is widely disseminated around the world, nevertheless in Mexico there is little information about HCV prevalence, so the aim of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of viral antibodies against HCV, in a mexican population at the Gineco-obstetric Hospital No. 60 of the Mexican Social Security Institute.
Material and methods. Using an enzymatic immunoassay in serum human, seroprevalence rate of seropositive donors and seropositive patients was calculate. A polimerase chained reaction was made subsequently in each one sample. The data analysis was made by descriptive statistical.
Results. In donors population 94/13,738 (0.68%) was ELISA against HCV positive and the active infection was determinated in 0.13%. In suspected-HCV patients 304/3,264 (9.3%) ELISA against HCV resulted positive and 2.5% had detectable qualitative PCR.
Conclusions: The prevalence of antibodies against hepatitis C in our population was similar to that reported in previous studies carried out in Mexico.
