ABSTRACT
Introduction: The high frequency of viral infections transmitted by contaminated blood make necessary that the blood banks determine antibodies against the most important of the like: Immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis C (HCV) and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The aim of this work was to determine the frequency of positive donors to HIV, HCV and HBsAg in familiar donors from the Transfusion Blood Service of Del Carmen Hospital. Donors and methods: One thousand two hundred twenty four familiar blood donors recibed 1997 and 1998 in Del Carmen Hospital were included. The determination of antibodies against HIV was made using the Ortho HIV-1/HIV-2 Ab capture ELISA Test System, anti HCV was determined by IMX System 3.0 and the HBsAg was determined by Hepanostika HBsAg Uni Form II. Results: From all included donors in this study 326 (26.6%) were women and 898 (73.4%) were men. We found 29 positive cases of the 1,224 blood donors. Two donors (0.16%) were positive for HIV, 21 (1.72%) were positive for HCV and 6 (0.49%) were positive for HBsAg. Conclusions: The frequency of positive antibodies against HIV, HCV and HBsAg was important in familiar donors. This could be explained because the population of this study were principally voluntary blood donors with a criterion of selection.
