ABSTRACT

We reviewed the laboratory tests reported in the National Institute of Pediatric in Mexico City on the Bacteriology, Virology, Parasitology and Mycology laboratories during the months of April, May, June, July and August of 2002 with the objective to give some local recommendations to optimize the health attention and the financial resources.
We suggest avoid to take some laboratories studies in a routinely way and to avoid the pharyngeal culture in children less than 2 years, in patients receiving antibiotics and in those patients without a justification to search the etiologic agent suspected.
