ABSTRACT
The main indication of autogenous epithelial culture is the closure of large wounds in extensive burns, where there is no availability of graft donor sites. It must be applied in combination with dermal matrix and fibrin for maximum effectiveness. Allografts epidermal cultures are used to cover wounds after excision of partial burns, in order to accelerate and optimize epithelialization. They have also been used in the graft donor areas and to cover mesh grafts 1:6 expanding, with good results. Uncultured epithelial cells in suspension have been used to close wounds due to superficial and deep burns, chronic wounds such as leg ulcers and the treatment of vitiligo. With the data obtained, we can not determine the true value of therapies using epithelial cells cultured or uncultured, in the treatment of patients with severe burns. Due to the wide variation in the quality of study design, and its conclusions and the many controversies in the results reported, the safety and efficacy of these products cannot be determined. The data available has emphasized the importance of these therapies in the closure of wounds of massive burnt patients and chronic wounds. Controlled clinical trials are needed to give it true value.
