ABSTRACT
Introduction: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the most frequent complications in the neonatal stage. Intestinal ischemia is a factor highly related to the development of NEC. Decrease in the ejection and shortening fractions during the first days of life may be an early risk marker.
Objective: To compare the ejection and shortening fractions obtained in the first seven days of life in premature patients with or without development of necrotizing enterocolitis.
Methodology: Premature patients without malformations who were subjected to a two-dimensional echocardiography before seven days of life. The ejection and shortening fractions were obtained by the Teicholz technique.
Results: 122 patients were studied, 29 presented NEC and 93 were controls. The patients with NEC were on average two weeks more premature and with a lower birth weight. The ejection fraction was equal in both groups, even when it was adjusted by the use of amines and the time at which the studies were carried out.
Conclusion: The determination of the ejection and shortening fractions during the first seven days of life in premature neonates does not predict the possibility of developing NEC.
