ABSTRACT
Infections are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit patients. The objective is to analyze the characteristics of bloodstream infection over a 4 year period.
Material and methods: We conducted an observational and retrolective study that included every neonate with clinical significance blood stream infection (BSI) admitted to the NICU between January 1st 2003 to December 31th 2006.
Results: We found 76 episodes of BSI with clinical significance in 891 blood cultures of 883 patients. The infection patient rates were lower in 2005 (6.4% patients) and higher in 2003 (12.6% patients). 68.4% were due to Gram positive coccus, 23.7% to Gram negative bacilli.
Conclusions: There was a significant reduction in blood stream infection. We believe that the diminishing rate of this tendency relates with the intervention measures we installed in the NICU.
