ABSTRACT
Insomnia is present at any age, but it becomes more evident as years go by. The estimated prevalence of insomnia differs greatly among the different publications, due to the definition used and the types of insomnia studied. Statistically significant associations between this sleep disorder and a several somatic and mental diseases have been found, and there is controversy as for the causal relationship between insomnia and depression. Insomnia indirect costs are a lot much higher than the direct medical costs, but as it was mentioned in relation to prevalence, the estimations have methodological problems that make them controversial. The impact of insomnia on work is important, and, as for therapeutic choices, they may be combined to obtain better results. The current concepts related to insomnia as a health problem are analyzed in this chapter, from Sleep Medicine’s perspective. The aim is to synthesize the estimations of insomnia prevalence, its different forms of expression, and explore its impact on people’s health, labor productivity and the consumption of health resources, as well to review the therapeutic choices that have proved to be efficient for the treatment of insomnia.
