ABSTRACT
Vascular anomalies (AV) can be classified into tumors (haemangiomas) and vascular malformations. The former, occur in 0.3 to 12% of infants and their incidence is higher in preterm babies (25%). Vascular malformations occur in 0.3 to 0.5% of children. The most frequent affected sites are the head and the neck (80%). During routine stomatological practice, most of these patients are referred by odontologist to hospital facilities in order to assess the risk, and to implement optimal treatment in the stomatological units. The use of cutting and highspeed rotating tools by the stomatologist is common practice, which entails the latent possibility of injury to the anomalies. The purpose of this paper is to describe the characteristics of VA, and the optimal care during treatment of children with these lesions, which can present as isolated conditions, or as part of genetic syndromes. We intend to determine the secondary effects of the medical treatment for these patients and their implications. We also intend to determine which patients should be treated in a third level center, and which patients can be safely managed in second or first level institutions.
