ABSTRACT
Introduction: Testicular torsion is the most common cause of acute scrotal pain in the prepuberal and adolescent boys and should be foremost in the minds of primary care physicians evaluating these children. Prompt diagnosis remains difficult and testicular salvage rates depends on the interval between symptom onset and the surgical treatment.
Material and method: Thirty four charts of children with testicular torsion were retrospectively studied, several variables were analyzed.
Results: In three of the patients a perinatal torsion was identified. This problem is mostly seen in boys six to 12 years of age. In 8 patients there was an associated condition. Twenty six (76.4%) had left torsion and 16 (47.0%) had intravaginal torsion. Orchidectomy was mandatory in 32 (94.1%).
Conclusions: Our study shows a very high orchidectomy rate as a consequence of torsion. For this reason, we propose an algorythm.
