ABSTRACT
Child abuse and obesity are important public health problems, which affect physical, emotional and social aspects of the indivudial. Child abuse consequences are frequently studied individually; but it is difficult to separate every aspect of the problem because physical disorders may have psychological implications which are risk factors to develop long-term health problems. Several studies have demonstrated the association between obesity and child abuse; these indicate possible explanations such as excessive food ingestion, a gratification to compensate for lack of affection and hostility in the child’s environment. Compulsive behavior present in some psychiatric or neurobiologic disorders are thought to be a consequence of child abuse or a kind of protection against new aggressions, mainly sexual abuse. Likewise, child obesity can be the object of several types of aggression such as harassment in school (bullying phenomenon) with psychological consequences.
