ABSTRACT
Background: Stomatologic urgencies have been managed at the Instituto Nacional de Pediatría since their beginning, the 365 days of the year.
Objective: This study describes the specific characteristics of stomatologic emergencies seen at the INP.
Materials and methods: Retrospective study of 720 emergency charts of patients seen as emergencies at the Instituto Nacional de Pediatría from January 2004 to December 2007, taking into account: file number, medical diagnosis, age, weight, hour of the day, day of the week, type of emergency and management.
Results: 61% of the files were of healthy patients; age range was 8 days to 17 years; the majority of emergencies were due to trauma. Mondays at 13:00 hours were the most common. The majority were patients with neurological problems requiring emergency treatment.
Conclusions: The review of medical files showed that every year the urgencies had a similar pattern. This fact must be considered in the academic programs of the specialties of Stomatology and Pediatrics.
