Comparison the psychosociales aspects (axis II) of patients with temporomandibular disorders according to the combination of physical diagnoses (axis I) of the diagnostic approaches for the investigation of the temporomandibular disorders (RDC/TMD)

ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare the psychosocial characteristics of patients with simple or combined diagnosis of the axis I of the RDC/TMDObservational, comparative study. 64 patients were included (56 women and 8 men), average age 39 ± 13.7 years, with temporomandibular disorders and chronic pain diagnosed with axis I (physical diagnosis that incluyes miofacial disorders, joint disorders and other joint alterations) and axis II (psychosocial diagnosis whic includes degree of chronic pain, mandibular disfuction, somatization and depression) of the RDC/TMD by calibrated researcher (Kappa.89). The patients were grouped into three categories according to the number of axis I diagnosis; a) simple diagnosis, b) double diagnosis and c) triple diagnosis.
The psychosocial aspects were compared in the three groups with variant analysis/posthoc Scheffé test with α=.05
The subgroups were made up of 12 patients (18.7%) with simple diagnosis, 29 (46.9%) with double diagnosis and 23 (32.8%) with triple diagnosis. The averages of degree of chronic pain (p=.07), somatization (p=.16) and depression (p=.07) increased to greater number of axis I diagnosis, without statistical differences, pain (p=.005), social incapability (p=.037) and work incapability (p=.012) reported significant differences according to ther number of axis I diagnosis.
The patients with more than one axis I diagnosis present greater psychosocial committment.
