Key words:

Parkinson’s disease, levodopa equivalents, levodopa equivalent daily dose.

ABSTRACT

Total levodopa dose equivalence is used to directly compare the dose of different antiparkinsonic treatments. Calculation of this equivalence usually is provided by different researchers and unfortunately there is not a unified equation on the medial literature. Using those equations to compare changes in proportions does not present any inconvenience but if the main goal is to directly compare total dose between patients receiving different treatments or to search correlations with the dose bias can then arise. Methods: total levodopa dose equivalence was compared in 85 consecutive Parkinson’s disease patients using different formulas available in the literature as well as with a new one which was derived from them. Results: statistical significant differences were found between the methods. Conclusion: By unifying the conversion factors in the equation a better comparability could be achieve in studies involving the calculation of total levodopa dose equivalence.
