ABSTRACT
Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) have been considered ideal for the evaluation of processes involved in learning such as memory and attention. P300 component latency and amplitude are indicators of cognitive functions that can be related to acquisition processes of written language and the natural number as well as to their expression before difficulties in their development.
Objective: to describe the P300 component and its relation with the elemental notions of the natural number and the written language in preschool and school-children with antecedents of neonatal encephalopathy.
Patients and methods: an observational and cross-sectional study was carried out with 37 children, 22 (.59) female and 15 (.40) male between 4 and 8 years old with antecedents of neonatal encephalopathy: hipoxic-ischemic (HI), hyperbilirubinemia (HB) and mixed (M); the condition at birth, the weight at birth and the socioeconomic level were registered. From the P300 component obtained with the
oddball paradigm, latency, amplitude and morphology were registered. The elementary notions of the natural number and the written language (Monterrey test) were evaluated; the IQ and the presence of neuropsychological sequelae were classified.
Results: association statistical of gender with morphology was observed, of condition at birth with P300, AP300 and morphology, of weight at birth with AP300 and morphology. Elementary notions of the natural number with AP300, specifically with the conservation. The delay in the acquisition of the elemental notions when contrasting the natural number with the encephalopathy, and the written language with the neuropsychological sequelae.
Discussion: in the relation between P300 and elemental notions of the natural number and the written language there were identified delays in the acquisition of the same ones, partially demonstrating the role of the neonatal encephalopathy in the cognitive processes in development.
