Hypermnesia in episodic memory: remembering paired associates

ABSTRACT
This experiment explores the development of hypermnesia using a paired associates (PAS) paradigm. Fifty six participants, divided into two groups of 28 each, studied 20 PAS using specific encoding instructions during acquisition (repetition or imagery); PA recall was tested across two trials. The most relevant results indicate:
1. There was hypermnesia, net recall increased significantly across trials in statistical terms.
2. Levels of net recall were higher for the imagery than for the repetition group.
3. Levels of hypermnesia were also higher for the imagery group. These results are interpreted in terms of the alternative retrieval pathways hypothesis, ARP, which predicts hypermnesia in conditions where alternative retrieval routes are made possible. Coding PAS through repetition and imagery thus facilitated the effect. Likewise, ARP accounts for the higher recall levels for the imagery group, as well as its higher magnitude of hypermnesia, due to the activation of more/alternative retrieval pathways through this manipulation than was the case with repetition. These results document PA hypermnesia for the first time using a paradigm with high ecological validity. They also reveal two different levels of retrieval and hypermnesia that emerged as a result of the experimental manipulations used in this investigation.
