ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify the frequency of diabetes mellitus II in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in Chihuahua State in Mexico during the year 1997, and to identify the pattern of localization of radiologic pulmonary lesions in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, and in patients with diabetes mellitus and pulmonary tuberculosis.
Design: Comparative cross-sectional. We included all cases of pulmonary tuberculosis reported to the Department of Epidemiology from January to December 1997. We obtained data from 181 patients (97 %) of total cases reported. We obtained information from epidemiologic studies. We reviewed 60 chest x-rays. Statistics data were descriptive. We did χ
2 to determine difference of site of lesion.
Results: From 181 patients, we eliminated 19 patients (10 %) under 20 years old. Frequency of diabetes mellitus and pulmonary tuberculosis was 32 %; 38 % (n = 67) were between 51 and 70 years of age, 55 % were males, primary education or less in 77 % (n = 125). Site of pulmonary lesions were and multiple lobes (48 %) in diabetic patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and in upper lobes (61 %) in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.
Conclusions: Frequency of associations in these two diseases is high, and multiple lobe involvement was predominant, presenting chest lesion site in diabetic patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.
