ABSTRACT
Introduction: The training course for undergraduate physicians in Mexico is a fundamental step to integrate theory learned at the school of medicine and clinical practice in a hospital, creating in this way clinical competence. Our challenge was to create tools to evaluate this clinical competence. Design: Longitudinal, comparative. Setting: The study took place at three hospitals of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS). Methods: We evaluated clinical competence of undergraduate physicians in diabetes mellitus (DM) at the beginning and the end of their clinical training course, evaluating their knowledge at these points. The study was carried out at three general hospitals of the IMSS in the Estado de México. The physicians included were those of the class of 2000-2001; we evaluated their clinical competence in DM before and after their clinical training course for one year. Results: These were better with regard to clinical competence, statistically significant after one year of training, except in therapeutics in DM, which was not statistically significant. Conclusions: We concluded that although undergraduate physicians developed better clinical competence, there is a breaking point between theory and practice that could not be integrated into a critical reflection frame of reference.REFERENCES
