ABSTRACT
The search for new compounds derived from plants that are toxic to different pathogenic microbial cells is a task of modern science. Taking into account this background, a study was conducted to evaluate the toxicity of aqueous extracts derived from
Piper aduncum, Spondias mombin, Desmodium axillare, Solanum torvum and
Solanum americanum on microorganisms isolated of nosocomial infections. Aqueous extracts obtained from leaves and stems were prepared at different concentrations (50, 100 and 200 mg/mL), and confronted against
Escherichia coli, Enterobacter sp,
Staphylococcus sp,
Streptococcus sp,
Neisseria sp and
Candida albicans by the diffusion disc method. It was demonstrated the presence of a toxic positive effect on pathogenic microorganisms, in all the extracts used.
