ABSTRACT
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV-TR) classifies trichotillomania as an impulse-control disorder, consisting in the repetitive action of pulling of one’s own hair, resulting in pseudoalopecic and symmetric patches and presence of short and long hair. It presents as a benign condition, self-limited, in an unconscious form, almost always in childhood or secondary to an affective problem, psychiatric diseases or post-traumatic stress. We present two cases of trichotillomania in pediatric age patients, where the diagnosis was done based in an exhaustive history and clinical evaluation, noticing that in both cases, different precipitating factors lead to the same disease.
