Eruptive xanthomas as initial manifestation of diabetes mellitus and severe hypertriglyceridemia

ABSTRACT

Xanthomas are lipidic deposits in the skin. Among them, eruptive xanthomas appear suddenly on the buttocks, shoulders and extensor surfaces of the extremities like elbows and knees. They are associated to severe hypertriglyceridemia which may be due to a congenital disorder or secondarily to other disorders like diabetes mellitus. We present a patient with severe hypertriglyceridemia and incipient diabetes mellitus whose first clinical manifestation were the xanthomas.
