ABSTRACT
Leishmania is a protozoan parasite that causes leishmaniasis, a disease of varying clinical presentation and worldwide distribution. The World Health Organization considers a reemerging disease, uncontrolled, and their transmission patterns have been affected in recent years by human action, among others. Globally, the transmission vector is the most common. Other forms of transmission include parenteral, congenital, sexual, occupational, interpersonal. The transmission of leishmaniasis by blood transfusion remains a major problem in areas where kala-azar is endemic. The transfusiontransmitted leishmaniasis has been reported widely in many countries including India. For this to happen requires that the parasite is present in the peripheral blood of donors, preferably asymptomatic survive the process and storage in the blood bank, and infect the recipient.
