ABSTRACT
Delirium has a high incidence in critical ill patients admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU). It is independent risk in mortality, ICU permanence, prolonged use of mechanical ventilation support and progressive loss of mental functions. The lack of protocols for the early diagnosis and treatment has a negative impact in the survival. The primary target of this paper is to review the current concepts of delirium in critical ill patients and to propose to the medical community the need of the use of guidelines for prompt diagnosis and treatment.
