ABSTRACT
The diversity of preventive programs and medical actions performed within the IMSS requires appropriate measures to evaluate and follow up these actions. Medical authorities developed a series of health indicators to evaluate health programs at the local level. Among the most im-portant results obtained during 2002 were the following: elevated vaccine coverage in children ‹ 1 year of age (96.2 %), a greater number of screening tests in women for breast cancer than for cervical cancer and 34 % of adult population screened for diabetes mellitus and 43 % for high blood pressure. At least 65 % of women in reproductive age use a family planning method, while rate for occupational risks in insured population is 3.2 % and permanent incapacity is 1.7 per 1000. Appraisal and follow-up of these indicators should allow provision of better health services to insured populations of the IMSS.
