ABSTRACT
The aim of the present study was to study the presence of
Streptococcus mutans in saliva and determine the level of infection in schoolchildren of six and eleven years of age of Iztacalco D.F.
The study populations was constituted by 109 students of both sexes, 57 of six years and 52 of 11 years of age.
The infection level determined by the quantification of
S. mutans in
Mitis Salivarius Agar with bacitracin to the 0.2U/ml and saccharose to 20%. In addition the sweetened product consumption was determined.
The results indicated that in the studied population the level of
S. mutans in saliva was in six years old: low in 12 cases (21.02%) and high in 41 cases (71.82%) and only four children were free of infection. In the group of 11 years old, two children were in low level and 49 in high level (3.84% and 94.08%, respectively), while only one children remained itself free of infection.
The found degree of infection was superior in children of greater age, which can be due to many factors. In the study was relation with a high sweetened product consumption.
It is necessary to implement preventive measures in the schools to diminish the sugar consumption and to establish measures of education of oral hygiene that cause the formation of dentobacteriana plaque.
