ABSTRACT
In a 2-year research conducted by the Department of Surgery and Maxillo-Facial Orthopedics of the Pediatrics Hospital, Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social in Mexico City, six patients of 6.4 years average age diagnosed with hemifacial microsomia stage I were submitted to treatment with an intraoral apparatus called a mandibular leveling splint. Such an appliance was made from acrylic individually an for each patient. The results of this research demonstrated the effectiveness of the appliance because it reduced substantially facial asymmetry progressive deformity by inhibiting growth of alveolar bone of the non-affected side, and also stimulated affected-side bone growth as well as favoring mandibular growth. Thus, unilateral posterior dental extrusion and leveling of occlusal plane is a result of the treatment.
