ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate nutritional counseling to change knowledge, alimentary styles, body mass index (BMI), and waist-hip index in personnel with obesity of a hospital.
Material and methods: We carried out a before and after study, without control group in a non- randomized sample of 19 persons. We set up a plan for individual counseling by a multidisci-plinary group to apply in a nutritional workshop during 3 months on personnel of the hospital.
Results: Results showed that the plan had a moderate effect on knowledge concerning nutri-tion. In alimentary styles, the average changed from 1.5 to 4.8 points. The average weight of the group went from 87.4 to 81.0. In men, average of waist-hip index was reduced from 1.02 to 0.93 (p = 0.0001). In women, there was no significant reduction, nor was there significant reduction in the BMI.
Conclusions: In everyone, we observed a chan-ge in nutrition knowledge, weight, BMI, and waist-hip index. However, no significant reduction was observed in women; other factors possibly had influence. We suggest to carry out this activity in small groups, for brief and conti-nuous periods, to reduce obesity of the health personnel.
