ABSTRACT
Background: The infection by cytomegalovirus (CMV) can be presented with inespecific clinical data for which the serologic studies and PCR studies are important to help in diagnosis.
Objective: To show the probable correlation among the plasmatic concentrations of IgG and IgM specific for CMV in subjects that present a positive result of qualitative PCR to detect this type of virus.
Methods: Seventeen plasma samples that presented a positive result in the analysis of PCR qualitative for CMV were analyzed through a technique of ELISA to determine the concentration of IgG and IgM specific for this virus.
Results: The 52.63% of the population was female gender and the 42.1% were childrens. The general concentration of IgG was 10.82 ± 7.44 UI/mL and that of IgM was 66.35 ± 32.02 UA/mL. Not statistically significant difference among the group of childrens and adults was found in relation to the averages of IgG and IgM. It was found that an inversely proportional correlation exists (r = -0.75; p = 0.005) among the concentration of IgM and IgG for all the group but not when the results are grouped for gender or age.
Conclusions: Our results show that the subjects with a positive result of PCR for CMV present an important increment in plasma levels of IgM and at the same time, a decrease in the value of concentration of IgG indicating a sharp immunologyc response.
