ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of diabetes mellitus in the Eastern State of Mexico Delegation.
Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between July 1999 and June 2000 by means of a census of diabetic patients regis-tered in the 44 units of family medicine. The socio-demographic and clinical variables were obtained in a specifically designed document.
Results: A total of 44 458 diabetic subjects were registered, with a sub-registration estimated at 21 %. The adjusted diabetes prevalence was 3.9 % in subjects with age ≥ 20 years; 62.3 % were women and 98% had type 2 diabetes. The direct relatives by patient were 5.3 ± 2.9, which results in a population at risk of developing diabe-tes of 294 531 individuals. The glycemia average was 181.05 ± 71 mg/dL; only 23.9 % had glycemia ‹ 126 mg/dL. Obesity was reported in 56.2% and hypertension in 41.2 %. The treat-ments indicated were diet 72 %, exercise 42.3 %, hypoglycemic agents 70.6 %, and insulin 15.7 %. Ophthalmic disease was reported in 10.7 %, nephropathy in 9 %, coronary heart disease in 4 %, and stroke in 1.6 %.
Conclusions: The magnitude and transcendence of diabetes represents a serious health problem in the Eastern State of Mexico Delegation; high social and economic costs that this generates require urgent actions to improve prevention and treatment.
