ABSTRACT
Reforms in the health care sector have been taking place at the same time as changes in social and economic climates from the 1960s and have been framed within the concept of development. The issues of equity and quality in health are priorities in the agendas of most countries. The main obstacle to overcome is the drastic reduction in social expenditure, wages, and remunerations because of unemployment; this is not an easy task for governments and society as a whole. Despite the great challenge, health professionals should know and understand that within this framework of development and globalization of countries, attainment of equity in health is one of the paramount goals. Therefore the objective of this essay was to analyze separate present-day concepts of equity and quality in health indicators produced for its evaluation, and their utility within the health system.
