ABSTRACT
This section describes the different human resources, health services, and infrastructure available and in operation during the last decade in the Mexican Institute of Social Security. Data describe trends in number of health units by level of complexity, type and number of human resources, as well as health services provided to millions of protected individuals. In some years, decline responds to reorganization processes within the institution, to census problems, or changes in operation criteria used. The changes in number of physicians or paramedic personnel are strongly related to financial restrictions to contract new personnel. The decline in demand of health services should be visualized in accordance with changes in employment sector and variations in different insurance schemes. Nevertheless, statistics provide a clear idea of what the IMSS is doing and the magnitude of the efforts deployed to protect the health of the population under its responsibility.
