ABSTRACT
This paper reviews the literature on the elder mistreatment. The occurrence of abuse in this population group is known partially, although it has been around for a long time. The interest in the topic is relevant due to the process of aging and the changing situation of the family and, more recently, within the human rights framework. The problem is nowadays recognized as a social and public health problem which affects a significant number of people in this age group.
