ABSTRACT

This article reflects on the dynamics involved in hospitalization of the elderly, a realm where the health professional is confronted by a number of ethical situations such as the exclusion of the elders in issues regarding their decision-making capability, the insistence on life-sustaining interventions by the physician. Some key standards and principles concerning decision-making by these patients are here reviewed. Since elders belong to a vulnerable group, this article also analyzes the principles of vulnerability and personal dignity as stated by UNESCO’s Bioethics International Committee.
