ABSTRACT
Introduction: Squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth (SCCM) took sixth place among all neoplasms; its incidence has increased especially in women younger than 40-years non-smokers or drinkers. Survival depends on prognostic factors (PF).
Objective: Evaluate, based on evidence, which are currently PF in SCCM.
Material and methods: Review of the literature published in Medline that supports which are the most important prognostic factors in SCCM.
Results: PF can be divided into two groups: depending on the same patient (PPF) and tumor (TPF). There are not a single critical PF, is the combination of several of them the best way to identify the risk. TPF: Age (‹ 40 years), socioeconomic status and Per-capita income, the origin of the tumor, the amount of alcohol/tobacco consumed and gender (in non-smokers/drinkers young women, the prognosis is better). PPF: Stage, tumor thickness, oncotype, surgical margins and ultrastructural/molecular features (mutation of the p53 oncogen, expression of epidermal growth factor receptor, and human papilloma virus infection).
Conclusion: The PF predict the evolution and let to decide the ideal and individualized therapeutic sequence, currently is not only the stage that determines the treatment to follow in CEB.
