ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify work and educational factors as well as knowledge on warning signs in diabetic patients with foot complications. Material and Methods: Study cases and controls, 62 diabetic patients with foot complications, › 40 years of age and › 5 years of diabetic problems were included during 3 months at the Vi-cente Guerrero Hospital. The control group: 123 non-insulin dependence diabetic patients without complications were selected randomly during 6 months. Information sources were clinic history, medical questionnaires, and patient questionnaires; the former were fully conducted at the patient’s home. We analyzed medical knowledge about diabetic foot complications in health workers (physicians), assistance in educative groups, work risk activities, and how the patient knew about warning signs in foot. Results: Only one half of physicians knew the alarm signs. There was statistical difference among foot complications and work risk activities (p ‹ 0.001). We found an association between diabetic foot complications when physicians did not examine patients’ feet (p ‹ 0.05). We found no association among foot diabetic complications with the others factors studied. Conclusions: Half of physicians did not know the warning signs. There exists an association among complication of diabetic foot and work risk activities, as well as a lack of interest in examination of feet by physicians.REFERENCES
