Introduction
The concept of an Acute Pain Service was first promoted by L. Brian Ready in 1988(1). The idea was to promote a more knowledgeable surveillance by anesthesiologists of epidural and intravenous analgesics (PCA) for postoperative pain control. Within a few years most academic departments in the United States had established Acute Pain Services and usually they were directed by one or two anesthesiologists with either residents or nurse practionters to provide assistance in seeing patients once or twice daily.
