ABSTRACT
Non accommodative esotropia is the most frequent type in children, affecting 2% of cases. The purpose of this study is to know the surgical results and the outcome of non accommodative esotropia.Material and methods: Study design: prospective, observational, clinical.
Patients older than 2 years with non accommodative esotropia that underwent surgical treatment between August 2007 and August 2008 were included. The follow-up was first weak, first month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and 1 year postoperative.
Results: 33 patients underwent surgical treatment, 41.17% (14) female, 57.5% (19) male. The preoperative deviation was 39.3 diopters. The surgical success at 12 months in 22 patients was 84.8%, of this we found consecutive exotropia in 17% and residual esotropia in 31%.
Conclusions: Our surgical success rate is good in comparison whit international literature. The most common surgical technique used was retroinsertion of both medial rectus. It is important to continue the follow-up for a longer period to get trust worthy results.
