ABSTRACT
This article intends to analyze the structural and subjective elements involved in the construction of a research problem by discussing a study on women’s reproductive practices and motherhood from different social strata in Mexico City. When debating this cultural research problem in anthropological literature motherhood appears as a complex social phenomenon that encodes several processes, which is surrounded by various ideas and practices all defined by gender and other hierarchical categories of the social setting, and which is influenced by several actors with different interests interacting to form the context for reproductive decisions. On the other hand, empirical comparison of women from two different social strata allowed me to define several issues to explore motherhood: the context of each mothering experience; the traditional roles of wife-mother-homemaker and husband-father-provider; the gendered division of labour and the demands of paid labour versus the demands of mothering; motherhood as a life project for women and how this combines with other life projects they pursuit; the reproductive and work trajectory of women from different social strata and the differences in upbringing methods and on value placed on children by women from different socioeconomical backgrounds.
