ABSTRACT
Fractures in bone structures affected by osteoporosis are due to a force applied on them exceeding their elasticity modulus. The most affected areas in long bones are in their meta-epiphyseal zone and in the vertebral bodies, sites where the trabecular system is losing with age or due to a bone metabolism disorder. An epidemiological study was carried out in Lomas Verdes IMSS hospital and it was found that the most frequent fractures due to bone fragility in individuals older than 50 years, are in order of frequency: the distal end of the forearm, followed by hip and the proximal end of the humerus. It was estimated that in Mexico one of each 12 women and one of every 20 men older than 50 years, one of these injuries could happen at some point of their life. The so prevalent vertebral body microfractures generally are subdiagnosed and only treated as dorsal or lumbar pain.
