ABSTRACT
Neurogenic pulmonary edema (NPE) is a life-threatening complication defined as an acute pulmonary edema occurring shortly alter a central neurologic insult. NPE is under-diagnosed in acute neurologic injuries. The objective of this paper is review the current knowledge about the etiology and pathophysiology of NPE. The roles of systemic sympathetic discharge, central nervous system trigger zones, inflammation, cardiac dysfunction, pulmonary capillary pressure, Starling equation and anesthesia in the etiopathogenesis of NPE are considered in detail. The diagnosis and management are also discussed.
