ABSTRACT
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae is a respiratory disease agent in pigs, which affects 12 to 16 week aged animals. The disease is important, not only due to morbility rate (up to 100%), but also to mortality rate (20% to 80%). A comparative study was conducted in a pig farm located in Huejotzingo, Puebla, Mexico, where 150 pigs were naturally infected with
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. Pigs were 76-82 days old and weighed 18 kg. These animals were randomly divided in five groups of 30 animals each. In the first four groups, half of the animals were used as controls. The treatments were: Group A, 5 mg/kg/day norfloxacin-nicotinate; Group B, 7.5 mg/kg/day norfloxacin-nicotinate; Group C, 5mg/kg/day enrofloxacin; Group D, 7.5 mg/kg/day enrofloxacin and Group E, 13.3 and 2.6 mg/kg/day trimetoprim with sulfametoxazol. Treatments were administered for five days, and animals were under observation for nine days. Parameters under evluation were: Fever, sneezing, cough, daily gain and mortality. Signology was reduced, but not significantly in the animal treatment groups (P › 0.05), and was only significantly reduced in Group D (P ‹ 0.05).
