ABSTRACT
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the chronic lung diseases more frequent of the newborn that affects predominantly preterm infants with very low birth weight. In the last two decades the incidence of this pathology has increased, in parallel with the improvement in the survival of this population. With the purpose of unifying the diagnosis criteria of the BPD in the 2000 year, the US National Institutes of Health suggested a new definition. The nutrition plays an important role in the normal maturation and repairs the damage of the lung. There is not supporting evidence that the regular therapies with bronchodilators and diuretics have long term benefits. The employment of systemic steroids should be restricted because conditioning neurological sequels. In spite of the advances in the prevention and treatment, the BPD continues being the principal cause of long term morbidity and mortality in newborn infants with weight smaller than 1,500 grams to born.
