ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the immunosuppressive treatment in patients with ocular inflammatory diseases based on the control of inflammation and visual effects.
Method: A retrospective study of 192 patients with inflammatory eye disease, with or without treatment, in the period 2008-2009, by reviewing the electronic database.
Results: The azathioprine (43%) was the most widely used immunosuppressive in pars planitis and Vogt-Koyanagi- Harada, followed by methotrexate (30%); cyclophosphamide (19%) in Wegener’s granulomatosis and retinal vasculitis and. dapsone (1.5%) in ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid. Laboratory tests presented alterations in 18% of cases. With azathioprine and cyclophosphamide about 60% improved their visual acuity, with methotrexate 50% stayed with it and 90% received anti-inflammatory steroid and/or non-steroidal.
Conclusions: The immunosuppressants are a beneficial alternative for the management of ocular inflammatory diseases, as most able to maintain adequate control with a single drug, which is reflected in the stabilization or improvement in visual acuity. Significant adverse effects for the modification or suspension of immunosuppression were 18%, which justifies its use. However, this does not free to continue using steroidal anti-inflammatory and/or non-steroidal.
