ABSTRACT
Introduction: Retinopathy of prematurity is emerging in Guatemala as an important cause of blindness, potentially preventable and treatable.
Materials and methods: During February 2008 to January 2009, 74 premature neonates born at San Juan de Dios General Hospital located at the capital city of Guatemala were examined. Patients with the following criteria were included: birth weight ≤1750 g and/or gestational age ≤34 weeks, birth weight ›1750 g and/or gestational age ›34 weeks at the discretion of the neonatologist.
Results: 18 patients (24.32%) with retinopathy of prematurity were found.
Conclusions: The observed characteristics suggest that all the patients with less than 37 weeks of gestation and/or weight less than 2000 grams should be evaluated and that a rigorous protocol for the use of inhaled oxygen should be elaborated.
