ABSTRACT
Given the importance of aminoglycosides and aminocyclitols in veterinary practice, and by virtue of the enormous quantity of information that has been generated about these antimicrobials, it was considered important to consult both pharmacological and clinical analyses specialized literature. The underlying objective of this paper was to align clinical activities with those of researchers in order to obtain, as thoroughly as posible, better use of these drugs in the practice. However, an effort was also made to point out areas that require research attention. This paper is not intended to be encyclopaedic. Only a small percentage of the great amount of information generated about these two groups of antimicrobials is included. Emphasis has been placed on pharmacological aspects of clinical importance, including general characteristics of the groups, pharmacokinetic data, spectrum, residues, toxicity and uses. When thought to be necessary, the opinion of the authors was presented.
