ABSTRACT
Asthma world prevalence in children is estimated between 1.6% to 36.8% in contrast to gastroesophageal reflux (GER) which presents a value of 8%. GER greater prevalence in children suffering from chronic respiratory disease raises the possibility of a casual association between asthma and GER. The objective of this study was to determine GER prevalence in children suffering from recently diagnosed and to know their response to ranitidine treatment.
Methods: 50 children, with ages ranging from 6 months to 5 years, were studied. They were practiced continuous intraesophageal Hp determination during 24 hours. Patients were divide into two groups: Group 1 with GER was treated with ranitidine in a 8 mg/kg/day dose, and Group 2 without GER.
Results: Average age was 23.78 months ± 16.29. 12/50 children presented GER (Group 1). Boyle variables got normalized in most of the patients 4 weeks after the treatment. Only 2/12 children belonging to Group 1 presented regurgitation .
Conclusions: Silent GER in children suffering from asthma must opportunely be diagnosed to lead it to its proper management.
